WorkRoll server- and browser-requirements are as follows (for installations hosted by workroll.com, only the "browser requirements" below apply):
  • Browser requirements: WorkRoll is fully web-based, so users must have one of the following browsers to access WorkRoll: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or higher for Windows, MacOS, or UNIX/Linux platforms, or Firefox 1.x or higher for Windows, MacOS, or UNIX/Linux platforms. WorkRoll does not require any ActiveX controls, plugins, or client-side Java Virtual Machine.

  • The following WorkRoll will run under any application server that is a "JSP container" and implements at least the 2.2 Servlet specification and at least the 1.1 JSP specification. (Windows users who choose to install WorkRoll via the Windows-executable installer program will automatically have an application server installed for them.) Aside from Servlets and JSP, WorkRoll does not require anything but J2SE 1.2 (or higher) classes (J2EE modules provided by XML- and EJB-related packages, for example, are not required.) Several of these application servers are free, such as Apache Tomcat. (WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation if you don't wish to host it yourself. A monthly fee based on volume applies; please contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818 for details.)

  • The server on which WorkRoll is installed must be accessible via HTTP by any users' machines who wish to use WorkRoll

  • If you plan to enable WorkRoll's e-mail notifications and reminders features, you must have access to an SMTP-server account to enable these features, which almost any ISP provides. (No incoming-mail account is required.) If you opt for WorkRoll.com's hosting option, email-server access is included; contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818, for details.

  • WorkRoll has no hardware, network, database, or other server-software requirements beyond those specified by your application server. If you use a lightweight application server such as Apache Tomcat (or install WorkRoll via the Windows installer application, which installs an application server automatically), these requirements are minimal. If you use a higher-end application server (e.g. BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, etc.), you are probably already familiar with its requirements.

  • WorkRoll does not require an external database, nor does it require separate installation of a database. Please see the FAQ page for a description of the proprietary, pure-Java Avocado.db database used by WorkRoll.
