A list of notable WorkRoll features is below.
  • Host WorkRoll yourself (installation is quick and easy), or have WorkRoll.com handle your hosting
  • Fully web-based; all administration and use is via a web browser
  • For self-hosted installations, Windows users have the option of installing WorkRoll with a Windows-executable installer program; this program also installs an application server automatically. Users of any operating system may self-host WorkRoll as a self-contained J2EE "web application"
  • Tracks issues by status ("open," "resolved," "closed")
  • Tracks issues by priority ("very low," "low," "normal," "high," and "emergency")
  • Tracks issues assigned to and by specific users
  • Creates projects and assigns specific issues to them
  • Allows certain users access only to certain projects, or to have read-only access (these users can view but not change lists of WorkRoll issues).
  • Manages website or software feedback from users who do not have WorkRoll accounts (read about external feedback for details)
  • For software developers, creates instances (e.g., "John's development environment," "production instance," etc.) and associates issues with them
  • Creates versions (e.g., "2.1 beta," "2.1," "2.2," etc.) and associates issues with them
  • Assigns due-dates and -times to issues
  • Allows up to five file attachments for each issue
  • Allows up to five URLs to be associated with each issue
  • Provides descriptions for each issue, optionally associating URLs and file attachments with descriptions as needed
  • Provides for the addition of time-stamped comments about individual issues
  • Sorts issue lists by status, priority, version, project, instance, assigning user, assigned-to user, opened-date, due date, description, or database ID
  • Filters issue lists by status, priority, version, project, instance, assigning user, assigned-to user, opened-date, due date, or database ID (e.g. view only "emergency" issues, or issues due this week)
  • Imports issues from other applications or databases (WorkRoll imports in tab-delimited-text format); import functionality includes a robust format-error-reporting interface that tells the user exactly what must be changed before a can may be imported successfully (e.g. "Line 436: '12-03-003' is not a valid date")
  • Exports issues to other applications (such as spreadsheets) or databases (WorkRoll imports and exports in tab-delimited-text format); export formats are partially customizeable (such as the format of dates, whether or not a header row is exported, etc.)
  • Generates printer-friendly lists of issues, with user control over orientation (portrait or landscape), font size, and other options
  • Generates summaries of individual users and projects
  • Allows for tiered access (users can have "administrator" privileges or not; non-"administrator" users can have read-only permissions, or full permissions to change, edit, and delete issues)
  • Reminds users of forgotten passwords based on a "secret question"
  • Notifies users (at the assigning user's option) via e-mail of newly assigned issues, and of changes to existing issues
  • Optionally attaches "iCalendar" files to these notifications (iCalendar files when double-clicked become appointments in calendar programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, and iCal)
  • Reminds users (at the assigned-to user's option) of impending and missed deadlines
  • Allows for customization of emails sent to users (the subject lines of these emails, as well as the email signatures that appear at the bottom of them, are customizeable).
  • No database needed; WorkRoll contains its own. This means no database-server issues, and it also means that WorkRoll as a whole has a much smaller "footprint" than a traditional database-driven Java appication.
  • Provides a full help system in a desktop-application-style help window
  • Provides easy access to web-mail-based technical support from WorkRoll.com, as well as telephone email support via a toll-free number
  • Allows a free self-hosted, 30-day, full-functionality, trial period
