Who develops and maintains WorkRoll?
What is WorkRoll?
WorkRoll is an bug tracker (or "issue tracker" or "defect tracker"), a web-based application hosted by WorkRoll.com or on your own servers; once installed, users access it through their web browsers from anywhere on the internet. Installation requires no text- or XML-file configuration, and WorkRoll does not use an external database. Self-hosting Windows users may install WorkRoll with an ".exe" installer, which also automatically installs an application server.
Software developers should think of WorkRoll as a "bug tracker," that is, a tool to keep track of fixes that are yet to be made to a piece of software. General users should think of WorkRoll as "to-do" list.
Either way, WorkRoll allows its users to assign "issues" (things that need to be done before a certain time) to themselves or to other users, to assign a priority ("low," "high," "emergency," etc.) and a status ("open," "resolved," etc.) to each issue, to optionally associate each issue with a certain project, to set deadlines for the completion of these issues, and to link URLs to issues. Users may then sort and filter lists of issues (for example, sorting the list by due-date, or filtering the list to show only issues assigned to a certain user).
WorkRoll will also notify users of newly added or changed issues via e-mail, and will remind them via e-mail of impending and missed deadlines.
WorkRoll can generate printer-friendly versions of the issue lists it keeps track of, and can import and export these lists to and from other applications. WorkRoll supports "tiered access" to its features (for example, "administrator" users can create new user accounts, while non-administrator users cannot; users can also be restricted to certain projects, or may be restricted to "read-only" status).
Is technical support available for WorkRoll?
Yes; support is free for self-hosted WorkRoll installations (for users and administrators of both registered and unregistered WorkRoll installations); for WorkRoll.com-hosted installations, a monthly allocation of technical support is included in the monthly hosting fee. WorkRoll users get personalized technical support by clicking the "support" link that appears on every WorkRoll screen. Users may also use the "contact" link of WorkRoll.com to get support, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818.
Is WorkRoll easy to install?
WorkRoll was designed to be easy to install; installation will take five minutes or less. Windows users may install WorkRoll via an installer program (which also installs an application server if you don't already have one). Users of any OS that supports Java can deploy WorkRoll as a J2EE web application (via a "WAR" file). Finishing the installation is a matter of pointing your browser to a URL on your server and performing a few easy configuration steps (such as assigning yourself a username and password). This configuration, and all WorkRoll configuration, takes place right in your browser; it is never necessary to use separate tools for configuration, to run command-line utilities, or to edit text or XML configuration files. (Also, WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation if you don't wish to host it yourself. A monthly fee based on volume applies; please contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818, for details.)
Do I have to install WorkRoll, or is hosting available?
WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation. In addition to the license fee, a monthly fee applies; please go here for details, contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818.
Can users in different locations access the same WorkRoll installation?
Yes; since WorkRoll is fully web-based, users can access WorkRoll from any location with an internet connection.
Do users need to install WorkRoll software on their computers to use WorkRoll?
No. Users access WorkRoll through a regular web browser.
What is the "Windows installer application"?
For self-hosted WorkRoll installations installed on Windows, there is a "Windows executable" program (such as the installer programs that you would use to install a regular, non-Java Windows application such as iTunes, Microsoft Word, etc.). This program also installs a JSP application server (WorkRoll requires this software to run). Using the Windows executable to install WorkRoll on Windows is optional; users who want more control over their installations have other installation options.
I use Windows and I want to host WorkRoll myself; do I have to use the Windows installer?
No. This installer is provided as a convenience to Windows users. (Installers for other operating systems may be available in the future.)
Does WorkRoll.com accept suggestions for new WorkRoll features?
Yes. Many enhancements to WorkRoll have been based on user feedback. Please have a look at the current list of upcoming features and let WorkRoll know if you'd like to see one or more of them in a future release (or, of course, if there's a feature you'd like to see that's not on the list).
How many users does WorkRoll support?
WorkRoll supports an unlimited number of users.
Can I use WorkRoll to manage feedback from users who do not have access to WorkRoll?
Yes. Please read about external feedback for details.
Can I attach files to specific issues?
Yes. You may attach up to five files to each issue; it's as easy as attaching a file to an email message.
Can I associate URLs with specific issues?
Yes. You may attach up to five URLs to each issue.
Can I allow some users to view only certain projects?
Yes. You may allow each user to view all projects, or only certain projects.
Can I allow some users to view, but not edit, issues?
Yes. Users may be created with "read-only" privileges, or full privileges allowing them to edit and delete issues as well as view (read) them.
Can I import and export issues into and out of WorkRoll from another program or database?
Yes, and you do it all through your web browser. WorkRoll allows you to export all issues in its database in the most commonly used format (a "tab-delimited text file"). You can then open the file in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3, into any database, or into another WorkRoll installation. Likewise, WorkRoll can import tab-delimited text files generated by spreadsheet programs, databases, or other WorkRoll installations.
What are "e-mail notifications and reminders"?
WorkRoll can send e-mail to users telling them of new and changed issues that are assigned to them (notifications), and it can send e-mail reminding users of upcoming deadlines and missed deadlines (reminders). The user who assigns the issue may choose whether or not to have WorkRoll send the notification; the user to whom the issue is assigned may choose whether or not to receive reminder e-mails (and how soon before deadlines to receive them). For self-hosted installations, WorkRoll's e-mail-integration features require access to an SMTP (outgoing-mail) account; such accounts are generally free with basic ISP accounts, and available on most local networks. All WorkRoll.com-hosted installations support e-mail-based features.
Can WorkRoll sort issue lists?
Yes. You can sort lists of issues by status, priority, assigning user, assigned-to user, opened-date, due date, description, and database ID, in ascending or descending order.
Can WorkRoll filter issue lists?
Yes. You can filter by all the fields you can sort by except for "description"; for example, you can filter a list so that you only see issues assigned to certain users, or only issues due before a certain date, or only issues with a priority of "high" or above.
Can WorkRoll sort and filter issue lists at the same time?
Yes. This will sound like a odd question to people who have not been frustrated by issue-tracking software that offers sorting and filtering, but not at the same time. WorkRoll issue lists can, for example, be filtered to show only issues assigned to "John Smith," and then sorted by priority, with emergency-priority issues at the top of the list and very-low-priority issues at the bottom of the list.
Is WorkRoll "e-mail-friendly" even if I don't enable notifications and reminders?
Yes. In most places where users' names appear in WorkRoll (such as in a list of issues), these names are clickable e-mail links. As appropriate, clicking these links will not only launch an e-mail window addressed to the user; it will also populate the subject line of the message with text summarizing the nature of the message and the issue to which it refers.
Can I view WorkRoll issues in a spereadsheet application like Excel?
Yes. All spreadsheet applications can import tab-delimited text files, and these files are what WorkRoll exports.
How does WorkRoll administration work?
At least one WorkRoll user is designated as an administrator; users with administrator privileges can perform tasks that non-administrators cannot, such as creating new user accounts and new projects, resetting passwords, and so on. All administration is done through a web browser.
How do users get help if they need it?
All WorkRoll users (whether or not their WorkRoll installation is registered) are entitled to technical support from WorkRoll.com (see "Is technical support available for WorkRoll?"). "Regular" users (that is, non-administrators) will most often find the help they need in the "help" section of WorkRoll, or by clicking "help" icons adjecent to many page elements. In situations such as when a user loses his or her password, the user is given the name and e-mail address of the "primary administrator" of the WorkRoll installation.
Can WorkRoll remind users that an issue's deadline is approaching?
Yes. Users have the option of receiving these reminders (and can choose how soon before the deadline to receive them).
Can WorkRoll notify users via e-mail if they have missed a deadline?
Yes.
Can WorkRoll notify users via e-mail of new issues assigned to them, or of changes to issues assigned to them?
Yes.
Can users print lists of WorkRoll issues?
Yes, WorkRoll generates printer-friendly versions of issue lists (in portrait or landscape orientation), with the user controlling font size, optional line shading, and other options.
Does WorkRoll support multiple projects?
Yes; it is expected that WorkRoll will be used this way. WorkRoll users generally separate issues into projects (such as "Main Site," "Intranet," etc.); thus issues may be sorted, filtered, and summarized by project.
Can I keep track of multiple versions of a project with WorkRoll?
Yes -- for example, you may periodically release versions of a software application, and want to associate certain issues with certain versions. WorkRoll supports this, as well as the ability to sort and filter by version.
Can WorkRoll keep track of issues that exist in some development instances and not others?
If you are a general-interest user and not a software developer, you probably don't understand this question, which is fine. If you are a developer: in addition to keeping track of multiple projects (such as multiple web sites, multiple desktop applications, etc.) and multiple versions of projects, it can also keep track of different instances under which these projects run. For example, you might assign instances such as "main development environment," "production," "bill's port-7001 instance," etc., to various issues.
Do users have to assign projects to issues?
No, WorkRoll does not require this.
Can WorkRoll generate summary reports?
Yes. WorkRoll generates summaries of both users and projects, itemizing issues based on their status, their priority, whom they are assigned to, etc.
Can deadlines be assigned a time as well as a date?
Yes. WorkRoll provides a calendar-and-timeline interface for doing this.
What is "external feedback"?
WorkRoll's external-feedback feature allows you to solicit feedback from website visitors or software users and integrate that process seamlessly with WorkRoll. Visitors to your website (whether it's in "beta release" or has been released to the public) submit comments; these comments become bugs that you can track in the WorkRoll database. Such visitors won't even know that they've interacted with WorkRoll. This feature may be used to solicit feedback not only for web sites but also for desktop applications (or for anything else about which you might wish to solicit feedback). For more on this feature, click here.
Can I customize the emails that WorkRoll sends to its users?
Yes. You may customize the subject lines of these emails, as well as the email signatures (footer copy) that appear in them.
How much does WorkRoll cost?
The cost of WorkRoll depends on the number of people who will be using it. For self-hosted installations, price start at US$19.00 for a single-user license. Further details are here. For WorkRoll.com-hosted installations, a one-time license fee as well as a monthly hosting fee apply; details are here.
Can WorkRoll.com host my WorkRoll installation?
Yes. WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation if you don't wish to host it yourself. WorkRoll.com hosting includes SMTP (mail-server) hosting as well as application hosting; a specified amount of free technical support per month is also included (the amount varies depending on how many users you store in your WorkRoll database).
How much does WorkRoll.com hosting cost?
WorkRoll.com charges a flat fee of US$399.00 for a WorkRoll hosting license, which includes setup costs, SSL-certificate costs, and the first month of hosting service. Thereafter, a monthly hosting fee applies, starting at US$49.00 for up to five users. Further details are here. (Note that you are welcome to host your own WorkRoll installation; you'll find pricing for self-hosted licenses here.)
What payment methods does WorkRoll accept?
You can use Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Optima, Diners Club, Carte Blanche, JCB, or Eurocard to pay for WorkRoll. You may also use PayPal to pay for WorkRoll with a check, money order, or cash.
What if I am self-hosting WorkRoll and I don't want to use a credit card, but a check won't reach WorkRoll and clear before my trial period expires?
Contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818.
Does WorkRoll charge on a per-issue basis?
No. WorkRoll is yours after you purchase a license (if you opt for WorkRoll's hosting option, a monthly fee also applies). There are no hidden costs (and no banner ads to look at).
Are there any hidden costs?
No. The only cost is the cost of the license (if you opt for WorkRoll's hosting option, a monthly fee also applies).
How do I purchase WorkRoll?
For self-hosted installations, WorkRoll is available for a free, 30-day trial; after that, you must pay for it. (You may also purchase WorkRoll at the same time as you download it.) Begin that process by clicking the "buy" link at the top of all WorkRoll.com pages (or by clicking here.). You will purchase a license that supports the number of users who will use WorkRoll; then you will be issued a product code which you will enter into your WorkRoll installation. There is no trial period for WorkRoll.com-hosted installations; however, if you are interested in Workroll.com hosting, you are welcome to self-host WorkRoll free of charge for 30 days.
How do I upgrade WorkRoll?
Self-hosted WorkRoll licenses are available for one-, five-, ten-, and unlimited-user installations. If you have purchased, for example, a five-user license and find that more than five users need to be able to use WorkRoll, you may upgrade to a license that supports more users. To begin the process, click the "upgrade" link at the top of any screen on WorkRoll.com; there you will purchase a product code that you will enter into your WorkRoll installation to "unlock" it for more users (that is, the process is the same as for purchasing your original WorkRoll license.) WorkRoll.com-hosted installations are upgraded by WorkRoll.com if or when the customer wishes to upgrade.
My WorkRoll license doesn't allow as many users as I need; what do I do?
WorkRoll licenses are upgradeable; please see "How do I upgrade WorkRoll?"
How long is the WorkRoll trial period for self-hosted installations?
The trial period is 30 days; after that, you must purchase WorkRoll or stop using it.
Is the trial version the same as the registered version?
The trial version is identical to the registered version, and supports unlimited users.
Can I self-host WorkRoll on more than one machine?
WorkRoll self-hosting licenses are for one server installation. If you wish to run more than one installation of WorkRoll (perhaps for security reasons), you must purchase a license for each installation.
Will I need to pay to upgrade to newer versions of WorkRoll?
Upgrading to a newer version of WorkRoll 2.x is free for users who have purchased the current 2.x version of WorkRoll. A charge will apply for upgrades to WorkRoll 3.x. The only potential additional cost is to self-hosting users who have purchased a WorkRoll 2.x license and need to support more users than their license allows.
Is WorkRoll secure?
If WorkRoll.com hosts your WorkRoll installation, all users will connect to it via Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. If you self-host WorkRoll on a web/application server that supports SSL, then likewise, communication between WorkRoll and users will be encrypted and secure. If you self-host and your server does not support SSL, using WorkRoll will still be as secure as unencrypted e-mail (most e-mail is unencrypted). As for data storage, if you self-host, WorkRoll stores all the information entered by users in its own database on your file system. Sensitive data (e.g. passwords) are encrypted before being stored.
Does WorkRoll support SSL?
Yes; see "Is WorkRoll secure?"
What browsers does WorkRoll support?
WorkRoll supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or higher for Windows, MacOS, or UNIX/Linux platforms, and Firefox Firefox 1.x or higher for Windows, MacOS, and UNIX/Linux platforms.
Are there any applets in WorkRoll?
No. Applets are small Java programs that run inside of your web browser. They can occasionally cause some web browsers to crash. WorkRoll contains no applets.
Can I run WorkRoll as a Windows service (instead of as an application)?
Yes. For details, please go here.
What does "WorkRoll.com-hosted" mean?
WorkRoll is web-based software, which means that users use their web browsers to connect to it (instead of installing WorkRoll on their computers). WorkRoll itself must be installed (or "hosted") somewhere. When you decide to install WorkRoll, you have a choice: you can host WorkRoll yourself ("self-hosting"), or you can have WorkRoll.com host your WorkRoll installation for you. Self-hosting WorkRoll is easy, but some WorkRoll customers choose to have WorkRoll.com host their installation for various reasons (such as: they need for external users to be able to connect to WorkRoll but don't have use of a publicly accessable web server; they prefer to leave the technical aspects of hosting to WorkRoll.com; etc.).
What type of servers does WorkRoll.com use to host WorkRoll installations?
WorkRoll installations run on servers colocated at a secure data center in Port Jefferson, New York. The data center guarantees reliable power and redundant network service from a AT&T, Sprint, Genuity, UUNet, and Allegiance. All servers are backed by UPS as well as battery backups and have 100-megabit links to Cisco switches. The data center's network ensures that WorkRoll installations are accessable to the greater internet even if several uplinks fail. WorkRoll installations run as J2EE web applications under Apache Tomcat 5.5.x on BSD operating systems (OpenBSD or FreeBSD) and a variety of hardware platforms, including x86, AMD64, and Sparc64.
What do I need to install WorkRoll?
If you opt to have WorkRoll.com host your WorkRoll installation, you don't need anything. If you will host WorkRoll yourself, if you are a Windows user, all you need is this installer file. If you use an operating system other than Windows (or if you use Windows but want to have more control over your installation), all you need to install WorkRoll is a relatively recent (released after 2001 or so) version of an application server that supports JSP (sometimes called a "JSP container"). Such application servers unclude BEA WebLogic, IBM Websphere, ATG Dynamo, Apache Tomcat, Macromedia/Allaire JRun, Orion, SunONE, and many others. If you do not have a JSP-enabled application server, several of them are available for free (such as Tomcat) and are easy to install. You do not need a database server to use WorkRoll, which comes with its own database.
Remember that WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation if you don't wish to host it yourself (in that case, you don't need anything to install WorkRoll). A monthly fee based on volume applies; please contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818, for details.
What if I don't have a JSP-capable application server to run WorkRoll with?
If you are a Windows user, the Windows installer program automatically installs an application server for you. If not, several such application servers are free and available on the web, and are easy to install. Apache Tomcat is one of these. Or you may wish to consider WorkRoll.com's hosting option. A monthly fee applies.
What if I my JSP-cabable application server doesn't work with WorkRoll?
WorkRoll will work with almost any JSP-capable application server, since it does not rely on any non-standard Java classes or even standard extensions or "J2EE packages." However, if WorkRoll does not run on your application server, several JSP-capable application servers are free and available on the web, and are easy to install. Apache Tomcat is one of these. Also, if you are a Windows user, the Windows installer program automatically installs an application server for you.
Do I need a database to use WorkRoll?
No. WorkRoll comes with its own lightweight database.
What database does WorkRoll use?
WorkRoll uses the proprietary Avocado.db database to persist its data. WorkRoll.com developed Avocado.db in 2002 for use in the WorkRoll application; it has since since been deployed in several other applications. It is very lightweight (does not use a large amount of memory or processor time) and does not require either its own server machine or a separate installation. Avocado.db has proven to be a highly stable, efficient, small-footprint way to store medium-sized datasets (it is capable of storing 50,000 rows of data easily, and of serving that data very quickly). Developers access and manipulate data stored in an Avocado.db instance directly via a Java API. While development of WorkRoll has continued since its initial release in 2003 (go to this page at the Internet Archive to view WorkRoll.com's site as launched in 2003), WorkRoll.com has not developed, tuned, or enhanced Avocado.db since that time because it has been unnecessary: it has consistently met the needs of the WorkRoll application, and has been, literally, bug-free since its initial deployment into the WorkRoll application.
Do I need any special Java extensions to run WorkRoll?
No. WorkRoll ships with any Java extensions that are not part of J2SE (such as JavaMail). It does not require a full J2EE configuration.
Can I use WorkRoll if I don't have access to a mail server?
Yes. WorkRoll's e-mail-integration features are optional. But remember, all you need to enable these features is an account on an outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server, and if you ever send e-mail to people, chances are that you have one. If you exclusively use web-based e-mail services such as Hotmail or Yahoo Mail, then you may not have an SMTP account; if this is the case, your ISP probably offers SMTP accounts for free; if not, contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818.
Also, WorkRoll.com can host your WorkRoll installation if you don't wish to host it yourself; if you opt to have WorkRoll.com host your installation, email-server access is included. A monthly fee based on volume applies; please contact WorkRoll, or call (toll-free) 877-247-4818, for details.
Does WorkRoll need to communicate with other servers on the Internet?
No, WorkRoll is fully self-contained, and runs on whatever server you install it on. If you wish to enable e-mail notifications and reminders, this requires WorkRoll to be able to communicate with an outgoing-mail (SMTP) server of your choosing (this SMTP server can be anywhere on the Internet).
Can I back up WorkRoll's database?
Yes. Backing up WorkRoll is a matter of using its "export" feature to create a text file containing all issues stored in WorkRoll. Doing so regularly and putting the file in a safe place means that you'll always be able to restore lost data as needed, since any file exported by WorkRoll can be imported back into it.
Can I run the Apache or IIS web servers "in front of" WorkRoll?
Yes. (And if you don't understand this question, or will have WorkRoll.com host your installation, or are installing WorkRoll via the Windows installer, don't worry about it.) You can, optionally, run any external web server in front of WorkRoll, or you can use the internal web server supplied with your application server. Given that WorkRoll installations receive relatively little traffic (even with external-feedback enabled), an external web server such as Apache or IIS is essentially never necessary.
What is Tomcat? Do I need to use it?
No, you do not need to use Tomcat. (And if you don't understand this question, or will have WorkRoll.com host your installation, or are installing WorkRoll via the Windows installer, don't worry about it.) As a J2EE web application, WorkRoll requires a Servlets 2.2-compatible JSP container/application server to function. Tomcat is one of these; there are dozens to choose from. It is the application server that ships with the Windows-installer version of WorkRoll, and since it is free and is a mature, widely used piece of server software, WorkRoll suggests it if you are installing WorkRoll via a "WAR" file. It is also the main application-server platform for WorkRoll development. But there is nothing Tomcat-specific about WorkRoll. (Note: Tomcat is developed and maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, but is not to be confused with the Apache web server, often just referred to as "Apache.")
What is the current version of WorkRoll?
The most recent version of WorkRoll is 2.62.
What do I do if I lose my password?
There is a "Forgot your password?" link on the login page; if you follow this link and can answer the "secret question" you answered when you first logged on to WorkRoll, WorkRoll will remind you of your password. If you cannot remember the answer to your "secret question," contact an administrator, who can reset your password for you. (Administrators should take special care to remember their passwords.)
Do I have to look at banner ads to use WorkRoll?
Never. (Not during the trial period, and not after you've purchased WorkRoll.) You purchase a WorkRoll license based on the number of people who will be using it, and then you own it. There are no hidden costs, including having to look at advertisements. The WorkRoll.com-hosted version of WorkRoll likewise contains no advertisements.
I lost my product key that I received after purchasing WorkRoll; how do I get it back?
Contact WorkRoll.
Does WorkRoll.com give my e-mail address to anyone?
No. Furthermore, WorkRoll never supplies any information that you have entered to anyone.
Who develops and maintains WorkRoll?
Workroll was developed and is maintained by Steve Schneider, a New York City-based web developer. He has been building web applications since 1995, and Java applications since 1999
During the past decade, he has taken a lead role in developing web sites for clients such as Warner Music Group; Carnegie Hall; Guardian Life Insurance Group; NBC; MTV; BMW Motorcycles; Mercedes Benz of North America; Boo.com; Starwood Hotels; and many others. He has worked for a variety of companies, from web consultancies such as Avalanche Systems, Razorfish, Inc., and Organic, Inc.; ad agencies such as Merkley & Partners; "pure-play" start-up firms such as TabletHotels and HNW, Inc.; financial-services firms such as TIAA-CREF; and content-driven IT operations, most notably the new-media division of Major League Baseball (mlb.com).
He began work on WorkRoll in December of 2002, releasing the first public version of the application (2.03) in August of 2003.
He currently works as a technical team lead at Quigo, Inc., in New York City.
